一天，在詹姆士·罗斯查尔德爵士家的宴会上，法国著名画家欧仁·德拉克罗瓦当场透露：在过去的一段时间里，他一直发愁为正在创作中的画寻找一位乞丐模特儿。
当他的目光停留在爵士脸上时，灵感突然闪现在脑中——他梦寐以求的模特儿就在眼前。
作为一名忠实的艺术爱好者，罗斯查尔德高兴地答应扮演一名乞丐。
第二天，在德拉克罗瓦的画室里，他将一件束腰外衣围在爵士肩上，让爵士手握一根短棍，并摆出一个造型，如同正在一座古罗马神庙前的阶梯上休息一样。
德拉克罗瓦离开画室时，他最得意的一名学生进来看到了罗斯查尔德的乞丐造型。
年轻人自然而然地认为这个乞丐是刚刚被带进画室，便带着同情的表情一声不吭地将一些钱塞在他手里。
罗斯查尔德只是道了声谢，便把钱放进兜里，那个学生出了画室。

没过多久，那个年轻人便收到了一封信。
信中大意是，因为他的善良本性，将钱给了一个他认为是乞丐的人，而作为答谢，他将得到一万法郎，可以随时到罗斯查尔德的办公室领取。
这件事充分地说明了艺术的魅力，即使富有的人也不例外——画家的灵感，假扮的乞丐，以及一个可敬学生的善举。

我试着将自己的生活方式顺应天性，并在劳动中尽力模仿；而最终的结果是甜美的睡眠、健康的消化能力，以及旺盛的精力。
我所得到的这些皆源于勤奋的酬劳。”
只有那些把精力集中到一些目标而不是自身幸福的人，才能获得真正的快乐。
